The Fair Justice Initiative (FJI) is a Ghanaian non-governmental organisation (NGO) working primarily with the inmates of Nsawam Medium Security Prison. Our mission is to combat discrimination and prejudice against current and former inmates, ensure equal access to effective legal representation, and improve the conditions of confinement in Ghanaian prisons.

There are three branches to our operations. First, we advocate for the removal of economic, educational, and social barriers to achieving justice and dignity for all those who interact with the criminal justice system. We provide pro-bono representation in criminal law matters covering prosecutorial misconduct, unfair trials, human rights infringements, and public interest, and run a legal aid clinic at Nsawam Prison.

We work extensively with local artists, academics, and business entrepreneurs to provide care packages, medical support, and improvements to the educational and skills opportunities available to both our clients and the other inmates.

“The only way to deal with the law is to make it a tool for justice.”

Nelson Mandela

Our vision is of a society in which every person is granted equal and fair access to justice and is treated with dignity during and beyond incarceration.
